Deline vs Splitwise: which one should you use for your next group trip?

Deline vs Splitwise is a fair fight to pick, because if you have ever split a bill with friends there is a good chance Splitwise is already on your phone. It has been the default answer to "who owes what" for well over a decade, and for flatmates, recurring group costs and the occasional dinner it still does the job properly.

But a group trip is a different problem from four people splitting rent, and it is worth being specific about where the two apps diverge rather than just saying ours is better and leaving it there. Here is the actual difference.

What Splitwise still does well

Credit where it is due. Splitwise's core mechanic - debt simplification - is genuinely clever and it is still free. If you owe one person and they owe someone else, Splitwise collapses the chain so fewer payments have to happen. That is the same core idea behind Deline's settle-up, and Splitwise had it first.

It also works across every kind of shared expense, not just trips. Flatmates, subscriptions, ongoing group costs, a car everyone chips in for. That is more than Deline is trying to do, and if that is your situation you should stop reading here and keep using it.

And it is everywhere. iOS, Android, web. On a mixed-device group that alone can settle the argument.

Where Splitwise has got more restrictive

This is the part worth knowing if you have not opened the app in a while. Splitwise's free tier tightened noticeably through 2026: a cap of roughly three to four expenses per day, ads in the interface, and receipt scanning moved behind Splitwise Pro at somewhere around $5 a month or $40-60 a year depending on your region.

On a normal week that cap is barely noticeable. On a group trip, where you are logging breakfast, a taxi, museum tickets and dinner all in the same day, it is not. And the workaround - remember the ones you could not add and enter them tomorrow - is exactly the thing the app was supposed to stop you doing.

The gap is not "Splitwise is bad". It is that Splitwise was not built around what a trip actually looks like.

The structural difference

Splitwise groups are open-ended. That is a feature for a shared apartment and a mismatch for a two-week trip with a start date, an end date, a shifting set of bookings, and costs that only matter inside that window.

Deline is built around the trip itself as the unit, not just the expenses. The whole itinerary - flights, stays, activities, food - sits on one shared timeline, and the cost splitting lives right alongside it rather than in a separate app you are switching to. Add an expense under a specific dinner or activity and it is attached to the thing it belongs to, instead of floating in a generic list where in three weeks "€48" means nothing to anybody.

Receipt scanning, compared honestly

Deline includes receipt scanning in the free tier, capped at 5 scans per trip, with higher limits on premium. That is a genuine difference from Splitwise, where scanning is Pro-only.

Worth saying plainly: Deline caps it too. Nothing in either app is actually unlimited. We just do not paywall the feature entirely on day one, because the first receipt is the one that decides whether anybody in the group ever uses the app again.

The group mechanic

This is probably the biggest practical difference for a trip specifically. On Splitwise, if your group wants Pro features, everyone who wants them pays individually. On Deline, if one person in the trip has premium, the whole group gets the premium features inside that trip.

One person covers it, everyone benefits. That fits how a group trip is actually organised - usually one person is the planner and the rest just want it to work.

Where Splitwise is still the better call

To be fair about it. If you are not planning a discrete trip - flatmates, an ongoing group tab, recurring shared subscriptions - Splitwise is the more established tool and it is not trying to be anything else. Deline does not do ongoing, non-trip expense tracking, and it is not trying to.

Deline is also newer and currently iPhone only, with Android coming later, while Splitwise has been cross-platform for years with a much longer track record. If half your group is on Android this month, that is not a close decision - it is Splitwise, or one of the other alternatives.

The honest takeaway

If your group's problem is "we need to track shared costs indefinitely", Splitwise is still a solid, proven choice and there is no reason to move.

If your problem is "we are going somewhere for a week and bookings, plans and money are about to get scattered across four phones", that is specifically the problem Deline was built to solve - because it is the exact problem we had on our own trip before we built it.
